Two 10K Races–Two PRs

I’ve never been a fan of July races in Texas, but I signed up for 3.  Two 10K races within 3 days of each other.  The Liberty by the Lake 10K race on July 4th in The Colony and the DRC Independence 10K on Saturday, July 7th.  The crazy El Scorcho 25K race is on Saturday (midnight) July 14th.  That one will be brutally fun!

SAMSUNG I wanted to safely push myself at the 10K races.  Of course, before the races, I looked to see what my 10K PR was… 51:19 which is a 8:15 pace.  I wanted to beat that time and had really high hopes of hitting sub 50 minutes, but that wasn’t going to happen.

The July 4th race seemed the hotter of the 2 races as there seemed to be more shade and more water stops at the DRC race.  I was pretty darn happy that I hit 50:58 at the July 4th race.  I was at a comfortable pace throughout and didn’t really push myself too much.  I had nice even splits of 8:07, 8:18, 8:19, 8:14, 8:17, 8:11, & 7:15 for the last .22.

SAMSUNG At the DRC Independence Race, my Garmin time and the reported chip time were a bit off.  I was pleasantly surprised to see that I beat Wednesday’s time by 5 seconds with a time of 50:53.  I had a slow start at this race as I was messing with Pandora of all things.  However, I caught up with some nice negative splits of 8:39, 8:23, 8:16, 8:08, 8:02, 7:53, & 6:53 for the last .27.  It also helps to know the course very well.

Back in March I had a birthday that moved me up into the 45-49 age bracket.  The crazy thing is that with both of the times that I ran, I would have placed in the 40-44 age bracket.  Instead I placed 7th on July 4th and 12th on July 7th in my new age group.  There are some fast runners in this 45-49 age group!  We don’t get older, we get faster!

I had a great time with my running friends at both races.  July 4th was special for car pool buddy, Joey Q. as it was his first race.  He tackled the 10K instead of the 5K.  He said that he wanted a challenge… I reminded him that he was racing in July.  He did well for his first time.  I’m hoping that he’s got the running bug.  He said that it’s like getting tattoos… he wants another one.  I’m not sure about getting tattoos, but I definitely know the feeling about wanting to race more.

The next big race for me is the El Scorcho 25K on Saturday/Sunday.  It starts at midnight on Saturday night.  Gonna be a crazy good time!
