Stupid Happy with El Scorcho 2012

2012-07-15 02.32.47The El Scorcho 25K race was a crazy good time!  I pretty much signed up for this race again since I was not happy with how I did last year.  Last year I was pretty toasted by the start of the 3rd loop.  That’s definitely not good when there are 5 5K loops.

This year the weather was better.  Instead of the weather being in the 90s… it was in the mid to upper 70s.  Still warm/hot, but by El Scorcho standards it was cooler.

It was great to see so many running friends out there.  One of the best things about this race is when you go past the finish/start line for each loop, there is a huge adrenaline rush.  Everyone’s cheering for you and urging you on.  Too cool!

imageI chose not to wear a hand lamp this year.  I did bring a small clip on light with me but never used it.  It was definitely dark out there, but my eyes got used to it.  I was able to use Felix’s light or others as we ran next to each other.  Also, after so many times around the route you pretty much knew where the curbs were coming up.

I had the plan of running 8:45 splits throughout the race and I’m so happy to say that I stayed on track.  Felix and I ran together for the first 3 loops and then I kind of snuck ahead for the last couple of loops.  I was feeling pretty darn good and wanted to push ahead.  He was understanding as it was a race.  However, it was so cool to run with him for those first 3 loops.  We train together a lot, but don’t run too many races together.  He’s usually further out ahead of me.

Last year I did a lot of walking, but this year I stopped twice for 30 seconds each.  Felix likes me so much better after I’ve ran in a well executed race.  I was definitely beside myself with being stupid happy!

Here’s a cool little video that we took while at the race.  Thanks to Cairo, Briana, & Briana’s friend, Victoria for coming out and cheering us on.  It was so cool to come around each lap and they were up ready to encourage and provide water, GU, & Endurolyes.

2012-07-15 02.33.03Here’s a picture of me knocking out Felix since I beat El Scorcho!  Last year I had a time of 2:50.  It’s so cool to be able to shave or scalp off 35 minutes with a time of 2:15.  The weather was definitely better and I know that I’m stronger than I was last year.

Would I run this race again?  Probably, but we won’t know until February when registration opens.  If you ever want to run this race, sign up early.  It sells out quickly!  I’d recommend this race to anyone.  You just have to do it!  I’m just not sure if you have to do the 50K… even though the thought has crossed my mind recently.
