I love this video! Sometimes we have to act the fool to hang out with our kids. However, these are the most treasured memories of their lives.

I love my kids – Briana and Cairo! I love to spend time with them. I love to be a part of their lives. I don’t want to be the overbearing dad, but I want to be involved in what they’re doing. There’s a fine balance between being their dad and being their friend.
Cairo and I have always seemed to have common interests, such as XBox 360 video games, kicking the soccer ball around, common TV shows, etc. It’s just been easier to bond with him than Briana.
Briana is unique in her own right and it’s taken a bit more effort to get close to her. We’ve done things with each other, but nothing has really gelled until recently when I took up reading one of her favorite book series – Twilight by Spephenie Meyer. She was always so excited about the book series and always talked about the characters. When the release date for the movie was announced a few months back her excitement was over the top. I told her that I couldn’t wait to see the movie. She said that I couldn’t see the movie since I didn’t read the book. Jokingly, I said, “OK. I’ll read the book.” She ran to her room and gave me the book. She was totally jazzed when I started reading the book. We instantly had a common bond. We would make comments about the characters in the book and the storylines. We could say lines from the book and have the shared – “You know, right” moments!
A bit about the book series – no spoiler info… it’s a young adult love triangle fiction involving vampires and werewolves. Crazy, but it works. I’m not a big fan of vampire stories or similar based fantasy stories, but Stephenie Meyer does a very good job of writing it toward the relationship aspect vs. the gory topic. The books are a pretty good read. I’m toward the end of the fourth book.
All of this to say… keep looking for things to do to connect with your family, your wife, your children. I love seeing Briana’s face light up when she sees me reading the book or when we’re discussing where I’m at in the book series. She’s been awesome in not spoiling any of the books for me. I’d ask her a question out of impatience and she’d say… you’ll see!
Thursday night/Friday morning at 12:01am – Briana and I are going to the first showing of the Twilight movie. I’m super excited to be spending this experience with Briana. I normally wouldn’t have Briana out until 2:00am on a school night, but she’s a good kiddo and one sleepy Friday at school won’t kill her. She’s excited about seeing the first showing.
Great news! Briana made the High School Soccer Team! She’s been placed on the JV team. She practiced a majority of the time with the Varsity team, so we thought that she might land up there, but was placed on the JV team. The coach let her know that she’d get so much more playing time on the JV team. The cool thing is that teammates from the Varsity team went to the coach and asked if Briana could stay and play on the Varsity team, but the coach let them know the same answer. There will be plenty of time for her to move up to Varsity over the next four years.
Some of Briana’s friends didn’t make it and she told me that she was there to console and comfort them. I’m proud of her compassion for her friends.
The high school soccer games start in January… Brrrr! Her club team has 3 tournaments coming up – November 21-23, November 28-30, & December 12-14. Of course, I’ll keep ya posted on how things go.
Cairo finished up his season a couple of weeks ago. His team will be playing this Saturday in the Tournament of Champions tournament. We’re sure that he’s excited about it!
I’ve been pretty busy since running in the DRC Half Marathon on Sunday. So I’ve been behind in getting this post out. I was also waiting for the race photos to be published. You’ll see how much of a ham that Denise is! :)
It’s such an awesome feeling to achieve something that seems so out of reach! 13.1 miles sounds like 1,300 miles when you’ve never been much of a runner or a walker. However, with a proper training program and support from family and friends, you CAN achieve it!
What made this achievement so much better was sharing it with my sister, Denise. We ran the whole race together and had so much fun! I think the smiles in the pictures show how much fun we had. Denise is the one that got me into running and is the first one ever to say that “I could do it!” Of course others encouraged me, but I’ll always remember last year when she came for the Dallas White Rock Marathon and always seemed to have a smile on her face. I wanted that smile, darn it! I just didn’t know that you had to work so hard for it, but of course it’s so worth it!
Thinking about running? You CAN do it! Just take it slow and gradually build up your distance/time to meet your goals. It’s such a joy running farther and faster.
6 more weeks until my next Half Marathon at the Dallas White Rock Marathon.
Wow! What a fun and quick weekend it was with Denise here this weekend. She sure does know how to show a guy a good time! :) I’ve been so busy having fun that I haven’t had a chance to blog about it. There’s so much that I want to say about the weekend’s happenings, but am a bit short on time.
In the meantime, check out these photos that she took while here.
Over the next couple of days, I’ll post my thoughts and emotions about achieving this awesome goal of running a Half Marathon. To say the least, I cannot believe that I’ve achieved something of this magnitude.
I give God all the glory for being able to run and for giving me the courage to push my body off the couch!
