Goooooooaaaaaaallllll!!!!!!!!!!

This might seem like a repeat blog post, but it's not!

Cairo Man scores!

Cairo-Soccer-Spring2008 Just like Briana, Cairo primarily plays in the defense.  He's been switching up to midfielder and forward a few times at the end of the season.  At Saturday's game, he started both the game and half at midfielder.  Cairo says the coach told him that he was playing sweeper, but he was way too forward to be in a true sweeper position.  Cairo didn't score while he was playing midfielder which would have been more probable.  He actually scored as a defender.

He takes a majority of the throw-ins on the left side.  The time was pretty far up the field at the time.  Cairo threw the ball in and the ball was passed back to him.  He launched it from the sideline and it went into the goal in the far post.  It was awesome!  I couldn't contain myself!  I was jumping up and down enough to embarrass Briana!

It's such a great feeling to have your kiddos score goals!

Road ID

Sometimes it's really crazy running outside on the sidewalks, trails, and roads.  People, drivers, and all just don't look out for you.  With my travels I've been running in all kinds of places.  Especially with places that I'm not sure if they have continuous sidewalks or not.  At times I might have to run on the road for a little bit.  I run toward oncoming traffic so I can see the cars coming toward me.  It seems that people are in too much of a hurry to allow you enough room.  It gets scary at times.  I would run on the shoulder of the road, but it's usually pretty rough.  Also, just simply crossing the street is a bit crazy.

I just bought a Road ID after all of the craziness and being urged by Ursula.  We definitely have to look out for ourselves more than the cars out there, because if we don't... we lose!

This is not only for runners, but also for cyclists!  You know who you are, but you've probably already got one of these.

Anyway, if you're interested in saving $1 then you can use the Coupon Code of ThanksMark366819.  The code is good for 20 people to use and expires on 5/25.

I chose the one that you place on your shoe, because I didn't think that I'd like the feel of having something on my ankle or wrist.

Happy Running and Cycling!

Matthew 5:43-44

You have heard that it was said, "Love your neighbor and hate your enemy."  But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5:43-44)

Matthew 5:43-44 is a hard one to live up, but I take hope in hearing about the story below.  I pray that I get wiser and stronger so that I can live more Christ-like everyday.

Check out this incredible story on National Public Radio (NPR), A Victim Treats His Mugger Right.  The best way to enjoy this story is to listen to it told by Julio Diaz, the victim.  You can as well read the transcript of the story at NPR.

It's truly incredible to hear stories like this, because the unfortunate thing is that I don't think that I or a majority of others would react the same way.  My daily prayer is for God to use me.  I just hope that I have the courage and strength to be used by God.

Champions!

Cairo & BrianaBriana and Cairo are Champions!  They have both completed a 15 week course at our church - Grace Outreach Center.  The Champions program stresses the importance of being Alcohol-Free, Drug-Free, and Sexually Pure.  I'm so excited that they've both committed time to this program.  They were given rings to signify their commitment to the Champions program.  They are both proudly wearing their rings.  This is the third time that Briana has been through the program.

I wish there was something like this when I was growing up!  I know now that they are better equipped to make appropriate choices.

2 More Weeks Until the Pig!

Just 2 more weeks until the weekend of the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati, OH. As a friendly reminder or a reminder to myself... I'll be running my very first 5K along with my sister Denise. Denise will also be running the marathon on Sunday. God bless her!

Am I ready? Yes, most definitely, YES! The Couch to 5K program was perfect for getting me up to speed. I highly recommend it to everyone thinking of running. As a testament... before starting the program back in January, I was huffing and puffing after a few minutes of running. Now, I'm digging running... here's what I did this week:
  • Monday - 3.7 miles in 38 minutes
  • Wednesday - 3.7 miles in 38 minutes
  • Friday - 4.5 miles in 47 minutes (longest run)
I cannot wait to see Denise and Debbie. Debbie, my oldest sister will be coming along to cheer us on! How fun! I'm also bringing Briana along. She was going to run, but decided that it's just not her thing. So, she'll be there to root us on also. I'm just excited that she'll be coming along for the trip to spend some quality time with good old Mark Daddy!

Half Marathon!

I'm taking the plunge! I've signed up for my first Half Marathon (13.1 miles) in Dallas on November 2nd. I have enjoyed running so much and feel so confident that I know that I can do this. It will be some good, fun hard work involved, but I'm looking forward to this challenge.

To prepare to run the Half Marathon, I have signed up with the Dallas Running Club. They have a Half Marathon Training Program to prepare you for the Half Marathon. I'm so excited to be a part of this club and program! I cannot wait to get started.

I weighed in at 180 pounds on Friday. I've lost 25+ pounds since the first of the year. I've never felt this good about my body and my new healthy lifestyle.

I never thought that I'd have this on my blog, but I've added a new element on the right to show my Running Race Schedule! How crazy does that sound??

As usual, I'll keep you posted on my running and progress. I'm looking forward to seeing both Debbie and Denise in Cincinnati for my first 5K in less than 3 weeks. I'm so ready for it!

Goooooooaaaaaaallllll!!!!!!!!!!

Exciting news!

Briana scored a goal at her game yesterday! She has been playing defense for the last few years as she definitely excels at that position. However, she's very exciting to watch when she's given the opportunity to play either forward or midfilder. She got her chance on Saturday to play center midfielder and scored! I'm so happy and proud of her! Ursula and I both knew that it was just a matter of time before it happened.

Sorry about the lack of a picture, Ididn't bring the camera. As well, I'm sure that I wouldn't been able to take the picture as I was too busy jumping up and down.

I'm one proud Papa!

Walmart and Other Happenings

  • I'm a not a huge fan of Walmart, just because I'm pretty much on sensory overload when I go into these stores. Too much of too much everywhere you look. They do have awesome prices though. Anyway, I went grocery shopping with Ursula and I noticed the sign above. Definitely seems like a great deal!
  • Cairo has been wearing a boot for the last week. No, not a cowboy boot, but one of those that you need after injuring your leg/ankle. He strained his Achilles tendon last Saturday. He did this while refereeing 5 year olds. He zigged when he should have zagged. He only has to have it on for a week so it's not that severe.
  • We had a glimpse of greatness on Sunday. We saw Deion Sanders at Sports Authority in Frisco. He was shopping with two of his young sons. We didn't bother him and pretty much everyone else in the store knew who he was, but didn't get all crazy. It looks like he's going to in a reality show. I might have to watch just to check out his 40,000 square foot house that's about 15 minutes north of us.
  • I'm teaching Pastor Jesse's class tonight. I will be teaching on Prayer. I pray that all goes well as I share what God has put on my heart on this important topic.

Kenny Cooper Greatness!

Hats off to Kenny Cooper on scoring 2 goals on Sunday's game against our rivals - Houston Dynamo! It was very cool for Cairo to meet him last Thursday. FC Dallas held a practice with the local youth. How cool is that!

As a reminder, Ursula and I met Kenny back in November. We joked with Briana that she was the only one to not meet him. We'll see if we can invite him over for dinner some time. You know... something healthy, of course.
Kenny is a great all American kind of guy! Again, I'm so happy that he scored twice last week!

92 Year Old Witnesses Like No Other

I'm impressed with how strong and wise some elderly woman are! I'm just wondering if I'd be doing the same thing if this happened to me... OK... enough pondering on that... no, it wouldn't have come across my mind. However, Jesus does say to love your enemy.

Slow Down and Run!

With my work, I got to travel to Scottsdale, Arizona this week. It's so beautiful there that it's so easy to see God's handiwork! While I was there, I got to run twice. The second time which was on Wednesday, I chose to run without my iPod. I just wanted to soak all of Arizona in. It's just such a cool place. At least for now. It'll definitely get a bit toasty in a couple of months.

It sounds strange, but running does slow you down where you can enjoy things like beautiful landscapes, sunrises, and all that God has created for us!
