I loved having Debbie and kids out to visit last week. An interesting thing happened while she was here. She was making waffles for her kiddos on one of the mornings and told me that she couldn't find the syrup. She looked everywhere in the refrigerator. To some, this may sound weird as most people store their syrup in their pantry on a shelf. However, this is they way that our dear mother stored it and we were just doing the same thing as we were brought up. I actually remember having this same discussion with my wife, Ursula, over some 17 years ago. Of course, I defended my position very well, but in the end I saw it her way.
Debbie, being Debbie... she had to inspect the bottle of syrup and noticed that it said, "Refrigeration not required." She was content with that and even laughed it off.
This whole situation made me wonder how often we do something because we've always done it that way or because that's how we've been raised. If we only took the time to read the label! I don't mean to compare the Bible to a syrup label, but if we only took the time to read the Bible and apply it, we'd know the proper way to do things in life. God intended it that way.
I'll leave you with one of my favorite verses that I always try to strive for...
"...Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak,
and slow to become angry" - James 1:19
